Tom Alsop is set to join Gloucestershire at the end of the 2026 season, leaving Sussex. The 30-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman has signed a three-year contract with the Bristol-based club.
This deal keeps the experienced left-hander at Gloucestershire until the end of the 2029 season. The move comes as Sussex manages financial difficulties that forced them to let the player go.
Details of the Move to Gloucestershire
Gloucestershire Cricket announced the signing on 27 July 2026. Alsop decided to move after Sussex faced sustained operating losses and entered special measures under the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). These financial issues mean Sussex is under a salary cap until 2028.

Consequently, Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace admitted that the club’s money situation made the move necessary. Alsop explained that he had to think about his family and his future. He noted that professional cricketers need job security, especially at his stage of life.

Meanwhile, Gloucestershire Director of Cricket Jon Lewis expressed his delight. He believes Alsop is a high-quality player who can perform well in all types of cricket games. Furthermore, Alsop will be closer to his home in the West Country.
A Major Career at Sussex and Hampshire
Tom Alsop, who joined from Hampshire in 2022 and had been at Sussex for five years. He first joined on loan before making the move permanent in 2023. During his time at Hove, he was to be a key player for the red-ball and white-ball sides.
In 2024, he helped Sussex earn promotion to Division One of the County Championship. He also played a big role in taking the T20 side to the Blast Finals Day that same year. In 2023, Alsop received his County Cap from Ian Gould on the same day as international star Steve Smith.
Before his time at Sussex, Alsop developed his skills at Hampshire. He was part of their 2014 promotion-winning side in Division Two. In 2016, he scored his first major century against Surrey. He dedicated that emotional innings to his teammate Michael Carberry, who had just received a cancer diagnosis.
Alsop Record-Breaking Performances
In 2023, Alsop scored his highest-ever score of 182 not out against Leicestershire. He had previously scored 150 against Warwickshire in 2019 and against Leicestershire again in 2022.
He has also played 101 T20 matches and scored 2101 runs. That total puts him among the top 100 run-scorers in T20 cricket history in England. He has a strike rate of 130.98 and has also hit 66 sixes.
One of his most famous moments came in the 2018 Royal London One-Day Cup. He scored 72 runs in the final at Lord’s to help Hampshire win the trophy. Because of this, he became the youngest professional cricketer to score a half-century in a Lord’s one-day final.
Global Experience in Franchise Cricket
Alsop is a known name in franchise leagues. He is now playing with the Sunrisers Leeds in the Hundred. He has previously represented Trent Rockets, helping them to the 2025 final. His strike rate that season was an impressive 150.81.

Alsop played for Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League in Australia from 2024 to 2026. One of his best innings is scoring 42 runs in just 26 balls in a pressure match. He has also played in the International League T20 (ILT20) for the Gulf Giants, where he had an average of over 45.
